SOLVING LINEAR EQUATIONS

Recall the following:

LINEAR EQUATION - Solve for x in the following equation.

Problem 6a:

displaymath17

displaymath18

displaymath19

displaymath20

displaymath21

displaymath22

The answer is x=-5

Check the solution by substituting -5 in the original equation for x. If the left side of the equation equals the right side of the equation after the substitution, you have found the correct answer.

Since the left side of the original equation equals the right side of the original equation when the value 1 is substituted for x, the solution x = -5 is verified.
