ORDER OF OPERATIONS: Example 1

Rule 21:
Expressions in parenthesis are treated as one number and must be calculate first.

Example 1: Calculate tex2html_wrap_inline80. Answer: The answer is tex2html_wrap_inline82 .

Solution:
Since there are parenthesis in the problem. Work from left to right. The left parenthesis contains multiplication, division, and addition.

Complete the multiplication and division first. tex2html_wrap_inline84 can be modified to tex2html_wrap_inline86 . = tex2html_wrap_inline88

The right parenthesis contains fractions; therefore, convert the 5 to a fraction, and convert the division to multiplication before you begin to simplify the expression.

Rewrite tex2html_wrap_inline90 as tex2html_wrap_inline92

The expression tex2html_wrap_inline92 can now be written tex2html_wrap_inline96 .

The problem tex2html_wrap_inline80 can now be written as tex2html_wrap_inline100
