Reducing Fractions: Problem 1

Rule 10:
To reduce a simple fraction, follow the following three steps:

1.
Factor the numerator.
2.
Factor the denominator.
3.
Find the fraction mix that equals 1.

Problem 1: Reduce the fraction tex2html_wrap_inline36 .

Answer. Rewrite the fraction with the numerator factored and the denominator factored. The fraction tex2html_wrap_inline36 can be written as

The fraction tex2html_wrap_inline36 has been reduced into the equivalent fraction tex2html_wrap_inline44

You can check the answer with your calculator. When you divide 24 by 36, you will get the same answer as when you divide 2 by 3.
