I'd go with my definition, it's cleaner. In particular you should define it as the positive number y such that y^q=x

The 2nd root of x is the square root: r*r = x.
The 3rd root of x is the cube root: r*r*r = x

The qth root of x is a generalisation: r*r*...*r = x, where r is multiplied by itself q times.
