Not exactly a math question, but I can’t seem to find the answer anywhere… how do you typeset set builder notation in \LaTeX with the right spacing and with plain text in it, e.g. {x | x is prime}?

Code:
\{x:\text{$x$ is prime}\}

\{x:\text{$x$ is prime}\}

Code:
\{x\mid\text{$x$ is prime}\}

\{x\mid\text{$x$ is prime}\}

Perfect, thanks. What exactly is \mid though?

\mid is the the vertical bar you get, with the spacing.

You might want a few \left, \right, and \vphantom's if you are doing it in displaystyle.

Quote:
\{x\ |\ x \text{ is prime}\}
seems to work just as fine:

\{x\  |\  x \text{ is prime}\}
