Hi,
I'm new on here, and was looking through some of the Forums, I see on the Physics Forum, that somone was copying their assignments 'Verbatim'.

I was wondering, how far can we go when trying to get help?

And what does SOS Math consider disciplinary for such users who do post their assignments. I see that the University is in that post.
Thanks
theman

This is my personal opinion: I find it ok if someone posts problems he has got as assignments, as long as he show the willingness to solve the problem on his own, presents his work on the problem and shows the desire to find out how the problem is solved and does not just want to copy a solution.
Assignments are given to assist the learning process of the student and I don't see a reason why sosmath should not provide help and support in this learning process.
The task of the tutors is to not provide complete (except in cases where it makes sense) solution and, rather, give small hints, so that the student can structure his own solution.

Similarly, teachers have to give their students clear guidance on what is permitted and what constitutes an act of academic dishonesty.

This site is meant for help with the occasional homework problem. People who answer questions on our site are encouraged to ask what the questioner has done to solve the problem, then give a hint, but not solve the problem for him/her.

If we receive requests from teachers to delete or watch out for certain posts, we certainly do so. The user who posted the question you refer to was banned from our board.

Does that answer your questions?

It does. I don't want to go overboard.

You are asking the wrong question. You should be asking, "How far away can we get?" Trying to find the limit is a very dangerous practice. Keeping your behavior CLEARLY appropriate is the real solution.

My views. I welcome others'.

I think you can usually tell whether or not a problem is homework or not. If work is not shown, I think only a hint is appropriate. I'm more inclined to help if work is shown.
