"Two cars, C and D, travel in the same direction on a long, straight section of highway. During a particular time t car D is ahead of car C and is speeding up while C is slowing down, During the interval t, car C gains on car D. How is this possible?"

Okay, I'm stumped - does it have something to do with C's displacement being larger at the instant? Could someone explain please? o.O An example maybe?

It all depends on their initial speeds Vc and Vd at t=0

If Vc > Vd then C is gaining on D.

If Vc decelerates at a rate of fc and D accelerates at a rate of fd

C will continue to gain until Vc - fc.t <= Vd + fd.t
