Hey I recently got a question from a university I'm applying too and its really puzzling me:

The Diameter of an atomic nucleus is about 10fm. A simple model of such a nucleus is that protons and neutrons are confined within a one-dimensional box of length 10fm. What are the first three energy levels, in MeV, for a proton in such a box?

I think is has something to do with degrees of freedom of the proton but I cant see where anything would be quantized here which would be needed for energy levels right?

Cheers,

Simon
