requiring that all Indiana schools teach pi to be exactly 4???

The bill itself is hilarious, and sets the value of pi at several different values, depending on how the text is read and where in the text you look. A web search on Indiana Pi provides a wealth of information.

On of my favorite parts of all of this is that the bill itself was sent to committee. Which committee? The Committee on Swamplands of course.

I remember reading about "Legislating Pi" in Underwood Dudley's hilarious book Mathematical Cranks. I think that it never officially came to a vote once some mathematically inclined constituents got wind of the bill and the uproar effectively killed it.

At least when you tried to calculate the circumference of a circle, you would have a value closer than anyone else's(at the cost of another 6+ hours)...
Even so, I guess there still isn't any point to it. I only remember pi up to 7 digits after the decimal.

Excellent! I wish I could see that contest. I don't know if anything is happening down here though, unfortunately. But last year, a group of students (math majors, no doubt) took some colored chalk and laid a path of the digits of $\pi$ between the CS and math buildings. Occasionally the color of the digits would change and there would be a different formula for $\pi$ such as:

$$\pi=\sqrt{6\sum_{k=1}^\infty\frac{1}{k^2}}$

and of course, other special numbers such as

were branded useless. Only $\pi$ mattered.

It was quite funny. All math majors should have that kind of enthusiasm.
